<AbstractText>Two surveys have been conducted in Brazzaville, Congo, in the National Programme for the Fight against AIDS. The first survey assessed the perceptions of health personnel working in three city hospitals regarding the risk of exposure to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). 85% of the personnel interviewed felt that there was a risk of transmission. Persons were considered most at risk when giving injections or obtaining blood samples; however, 7.4% still considered contact with clothes, hands, or saliva potentially contaminating. In spite of this high awareness and the fact that 50% of those interviewed had pricked themselves accidentally during the previous year, specific precautions were not adopted generally. The second survey was a pilot study to ascertain the feasibility of establishing information, education, and communication (IEC) strategies and socio-medical monitoring as part of a program on the prevention of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among prostitutes. Individual interviews assessing the prostitutes' knowledge of AIDS were conducted in dance halls, night clubs, and bars; the prostitutes were categorized on the basis of socio-economic and demographic criteria. 70% used condoms on a regular basis. Self-help networks exist which will be used in establishing prevention strategies.</AbstractText>
